Navigate Common Clinical Traps: Socratic Dialogue Demonstration

Do you sometimes struggle with common clinical traps such as clients looking to the therapist for answers, not completing between session activities, or having a high intolerance for uncertainty?

Dr. Christine Padesky will demonstrate how her four-stage model of Socratic Dialogue can help you effectively navigate these types of issues in ways that maximize client learning, elicit curiosity and discovery, and improve client outcomes.聽Participants will learn techniques from her recent book, Dialogues for Discovery: Improving Psychotherapy鈥檚 Effectiveness (Padesky & Kennerley, 2023 六合彩开奖数据), and are encouraged to bring case examples for discussion and role play demonstrations.

This presentation is part of Padesky鈥檚 听飞颈迟丑 Dr. Kathleen Mooney. They are traveling nearly 8,000 miles to bring brief CBT training to clinics and universities. Participants are welcome to bring Padesky鈥檚 books to the presentation for her to sign.

Christine A. Padesky, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and considered one of the leading CBT presenters in the world, appreciated for her depth of knowledge, compassion, and good-humored warmth. She is the recipient of the Distinguished Contribution to Psychology Award from the California Psychological Association and a Distinguished Founding Fellow and recipient of the Aaron T. Beck Award from the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies. In 2002, members of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy voted her 鈥淢ost Influential International CBT Therapist鈥 and named her book, Mind Over Mood (Greenberger & Padesky, 1995), the most influential CBT book of all time. Mind Over Mood, 2nd Edition (Greenberger & Padesky, 2016) won second place in the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award, consumer health category.

Padesky is author or co-author of six other books including The Clinician鈥檚 Guide to CBT using Mind Over Mood (Padesky & Greenberger, 2020). This clinician鈥檚 guide teaches Padesky鈥檚 collaborative and client-centered approach to practicing CBT, explores the evidence base for common CBT methods and illustrates how to effectively implement these with 100+ pages of therapist-client dialogues. Her most recent book, Dialogues for Discovery: Improving Psychotherapy鈥檚 Effectiveness (Padesky & Kennerley, 2023 六合彩开奖数据) is a comprehensive review of Padesky鈥檚 4-stage model of Socratic Dialogue (developed over the past 30 years) along with demonstrations of how its diverse clinical applications can help therapists manage 50 common clinical traps.

Kathleen A. Mooney, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and, with Dr. Padesky, co-founded the Center for Cognitive Therapy in Huntington Beach, California (USA) and co-developed all of Dr. Padesky鈥檚 workshops over the past 40 years. She has taught CBT workshops in nine countries on topics as diverse as anxiety, personality disorders, therapist beliefs, creativity, and resilience. She co-produces audio and video CBT training materials for mental health professionals and designs and manages two websites, one exclusively for mental health professionals ( and one for the general public ( She is a Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

Together, Drs. Mooney and Padesky co-developed Strengths-based CBT (CBT-SB). Their creative partnership is at the core of all their individual, joint and collaborative work projects since 1981.
